Hacking the DeepRacer

Posted on January 15, 2019April 21, 2020 by Matt

While we wait for the AWS DeepRacer console and league to be launched we had a little fun in the office with the DeepRacer cars we picked up at at re:Invent.

Turns out that you can remove the outer shell and replace it with a small magical unicorn.

Unfortunately it seems that our unicorn isn’t very good at driving the car, or possibly it’s that our home-made track badly made out of tape on the office carpet isn’t as good as a proper track.

Good news however, Jigsaw.XYZ has very generously agreed to purchase our own track so that we can work out on car training! We’ve split the track up into 16 different pieces so the hope is that we will be able to construct different layouts, like a giant scalextric set… If we can find somewhere big enough to use it! At 8m x 5m it’s rather large.

We have also discovered that strapping a set a 3D first-person view camera to the top of a DeepRacer is amazingly fun. We’ve been using manual control mode for the moment to zip around the office in between chairs and tables and it’s really quite immersive!
